八十天环游地球英文美文
But the incredulous Stuart was not convinced, “It must be confessed, Mr. Ralph, that you’ve found a funny way of saying that the world has grown smaller! Because the tour of it is now made in three months.”
“In eighty days only,” said Phileas Fogg.
“Yes. Gentlemen,” added John Sullivan, “This is true. Here is the calculation made by the ‘Morning Chronicle’:
From London to Suez via Mont Cenis and Brindisi, by rail and steamers … 7 days
From Suez to Bombay, steamer … 13 days
From Bombay to Calcutta, rail is 3 days
From Calcutta to Hong-Kong(China), steamer is 13 days
From Hong-Kong to Yokohama(Japan), steamer … 6 days
From Yokohama to San Francisco, steamer … 22 days
From San Francisco to New York, rail … 7 days
From New York to London, steamer and rail … 9 days
Total 80 days.”
“Yes, eighty days!” exclaimed Andrew Stuart, who, by inattention, made a wrong deal, “but not including bad weather, contrary winds, shipwrecks, running off the track, etc.”
“Everything included,” replied Phileas Fogg, continuing to play, for this time the discussion no longer respected the
game.
Andrew Stuart, whose turn it was to deal, gathered up the cards, saying: “Oh, theoretically, you are right, Mr. Fogg, but practically?”
“Practically also, Mr. Stuart.”
“Well, make it, then!”
“The tour of the world in eighty days?”
“Yes!”
“I am willing.”
“When?”
“At once. Only I warn you that I shall do it at your expense.”
“But it is folly!” cried Stuart, who was beginning to be vexed at the persistence of his partner. “Stop! Let us play rather.”
“Deal again, then,” replied Phileas Fogg, “for there is a false deal.”
Andrew Stuart took up the cards again with a feverish hand; then suddenly, placing them upon the table, he said: “Well, Mr. Fogg, do it; and I bet four thousand pounds!”
“My dear Stuart,” said Fallentin, “compose yourself. It’s not serious.”
“When I say – ‘I bet’,” replied Andrew Stuart, “It is always serious.”
“So be it,” said Mr. Fogg, and then, turning to his companions, continued: “I have twenty thousand pounds deposited at Baring Brothers. I will willingly risk them.”
“Twenty thousand pounds!”cried John Sullivan.
“Twenty thousand pounds, which an unforeseen delay may make you lose.”
“The unforeseen does not exist,” replied Phileas Fogg quietly.
“But, Mr. Fogg, this period of eighty days is calculated only as a minimum of time.”
“A minimum well employed suffices for everything.”
“But in order not to exceed it, you must jump mathematically from the trains into the steamers, and then from the steamers upon the trains!”
“I will jump mathematically. I bet twenty thousand pounds against who will, but I will make the tour of the world in eighty days or less – that is, nineteen hundred and twenty hours, or one hundred and fifteen thousand two hundred minutes. Do you accept?”
“We accept,” replied Messrs. Stuart, Fallentin, Sullivan, Flaniagan, and Ralph, after having consulted.
“Very well,” said Mr. Fogg, “The Dover train starts at eighty forty-five. I shall take it.”
“This very evening?” asked Stuart.
“This very evening,” relied Phileas Fogg. Then he added, consulting a pocket almanac, “since today is Wednesday, the scond of October, I ought to be back in London, in this very saloon of the Reform Club, on Saturday, the twenty-first of December, at eight forty-five in the evening.” In default of which the twenty thousand pounds at present deposited to my credit with Baring Brothers will belong to you, gentlemen, in fact and by right. Here is a cheque of like amount.”

Hope
Hope is what makes one‘s life continue forward. Setting goals for oneself is fine, but impossible to reach without hope. Many humans believe that hope is what creates disappointment; a sad belief to have. For hope provides one with the ability to project success in one‘s mind, aids in one‘s acceptance of one‘s faults and to know that challenges lie ahead, and provides the strength needed to remain appropriately focused on reaching one‘s goals.
Hope provides one with trust, healthy and responsible anticipation, and gives one optimism. Hope does not create disappointment, expectation does. For when one expects, one ignorantly narrows one‘s focus. Expectation is what creates disappointment by causing each expectant individual to feel pessimistic with failure, impatient with new fears and challenges, and immature and uneducated when their narrow scope of goal achieving goes awry. Hope brings one‘s focus on goal achieving into a broader view allowing one to see new fears and challenges and helping one to prepare.
冬季英文美文
冬季是一个享受舒适,美食与温馨的季节。冬季也是传递友谊的季节,冬季还是围坐在火炉旁谈天说地的季节。冬季是享受家之温暖的季节。
Welcome to the most easily misunderstood season of all, winter, a beautiful season of intimacy and reflection. I’m Faith at Faith Radio Online-Simply to Relax.
Winter gives us the opportunity to stay inside and look outside, as we're not called outdoors to enjoy the warmth and sunshine. Snuggle up in the sofa, put a blanket over you, have a cup of hot cocoa, and enjoy the observations on this precious season…
Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: It is the time for home.
During the winter I am content,or try to think I am. There is a wonderful joy in leaving behind the noisy city streets and starting out along the white road that leads across the hills. With each breath of the sharp, reviving air one seems to inhale new life. A peace as evident as the sunshine on the fields takes possession of one's inner being. The trivial cares are driven away by the first sweep of wind that comes straight from the mountains. The intense silence that broods over the snow-bound land is a conscious blessing from the nature.
Sometimes our fate resembles a fruit tree in winter: Who would think that those branches would turn green again and blossom, but we hope it, we know it.
Between the preparation and the work, the apprenticeship and the actual dealing with a task or an art, there comes, in the experience of many young men, a period of uncertainty and wandering which is often misunderstood and counted as time wasted, when it is, in fact, a period rich in full and free development. It is as natural for ardent and courageous youth to wish to know what is in life, what it means, and what it holds for its children, as for a child to reach for and search the things that surround and attract it.
Behind every real worker in the world is a real man, and a man has a right to know the conditions under which he must live, and the choices of knowledge, power, and activity which are offered him. In the education of many men and women, therefore, there comes the year of wandering; the experience of traveling from knowledge to knowledge and from occupation to occupation. The forces which go to the making of a powerful man can rarely be adjusted and blended without some disturbance of relations and conditions.
This disturbance is sometimes injurious, because it affects the moral foundations upon which character rests; and for this reason the significance of the experience in its relation to development ought to be sympathetically studied. The birth of the imagination and of the passions, the perception of the richness of life, and the consciousness of the possession of the power to master and use that wealth, create a critical moment in the history of youth, —a moment richer in possibilities of all kinds than comes at any later period. Agitation and ferment of soul are inevitable in that wonderful moment.
There are times when agitation is as normal as is self-control at other and less critical times. The year of wandering is not a manifestation of aimlessness, but of aspiration, and that in its ferment and uncertainty youth is often guided to and finally prepared for its task.
