TOKYO (AFP)—A father froze to death while sheltering his nineyearold daughter from severe weekend snowstorms that swept northern Japan. Mikio Okada, one of at least nine people killed as snowstorms swept across Hokkaido (), died as he tried to protect his only child Natsune against winds of up to 109 kilometers per hour in Yubetsu, Hokkaido, as temperatures fell sharply to minus 6 degrees centigrade.
Okada's body was uncovered by rescuers looking for the pair after relatives raised the alarm. Natsune was wearing her father's jacket and was wrapped in his arms. The pair had last been heard from at 4 p. m. on Saturday, after fisherman Okada picked his daughter up from a school where she was being looked after while he was at work. Okada called his relatives to say his truck had become stuck in the driving snow, which was several meters deep in places. He told them he and Natsune would walk the remaining kilometre. The two were found just 300 meters from the truck at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
Okada had his body bent over his daughter, gently holding her in his arms and apparently using his body and a warehouse wall to provide shelter. The small girl was taken to hospital, where she was found to have no serious injuries. Her father was officially pronounced dead by doctors at the same hospital.
The newspaper Yomiuri said Natsune's mother had died of illness two years earlier. The paper quoted neighbors as saying Okada had been an extremely caring father who would often delay the start of his working day to enjoy breakfast with his daughter.
His death came as families all over Japan celebrated Girls' Day, a festival in which they gather at home and decorate houses with dolls. ?He reserved a cake for his only daughter and was looking forward to celebrating Dolls' Festival together,” a neighbor told the Yomiuri.

(2024·河南六市联考)At an outdoor restaurant, a cockroach (蟑螂) flew in and landed on a woman. She started screaming out of fear; with a panic stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping, with both her hands desperately trying to get rid of the cockroach. Her reaction was spreading, as everyone in her group also got into a panic. The woman finally managed to flick the cockroach away but it landed on a man in the group who continued the drama. In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon a waitress who had rushed to their rescue.
The waitress stood firm, calmed herself and observed the behavior of the cockroach on her blouse. When she was confident enough, she grabbed it and threw it out of the restaurant.
Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, I started wondering: Was the cockroach responsible for their funny behavior? If so, then why was the waitress not disturbed? She handled the situation to near perfection, without panic.
It was not the cockroach, but the inability of the customers to handle the disturbance caused by the cockroach that disturbed them. I realized that it's not the shouting of my children or my boss or my wife that disturbs me, but my inability to handle the disturbances caused by their shouting.
It's not the traffic jams on the road that disturb me, but my inability to handle the disturbance caused by the traffic jams. More than the problem, it's my reaction to the problem that creates chaos in my life.
I understood. I should not react in life. I should always respond. The customers reacted, whereas the waitress responded. Reactions are always instinctive (本能的) while responses tend to be well thought out.
1.What happened in the outdoor restaurant?
A.A cockroach was found in a woman's food and then a man found the same problem.
B.A cockroach appearing in the restaurant caused a state of panic among the customers.
C.A cockroach rushed the waitress into apologizing to the customers.
D.A woman and a man were trying to rescue the waitress from the cockroach.
2.What's the meaning of the underlined word “chaos” in Paragraph 5?
A.Confusion.B.Success.
C.Poverty.
D.Harmony.
3.According to the passage, if you ran into a traffic jam, you might ________ in your car.
A.complain your delay
B.feel upset and annoyed
C.relax yourself by listening to music
D.expect someone to clear the road
4.What does the passage tell us?
A.Speak less, do more!
B.Actions speak louder than words!
C.Mind your manners while in a restaurant!
D.Don't react just from your feelings; respond positively!
1.解析:选B 细节理解题根据第一段中的“At an outdoor restaurant ... as everyone in her group also got into a panic.”可知出现在饭店里的蟑螂在一些顾客中引起了恐慌故答案选B解析:选A 词义猜测题根据第五段第一句“It's not the traffic jams ... by the traffic jams.”可推知“chaos”与“disturbance”意思相近意为“混乱”故答案选A解析:选C 推理判断题根据最后一段最后一句“Reactions are always instinctive (本能的) while responses tend to be well thought out.”可知反应总是出自本能而对策往往是经过深思熟虑的因此遇到交通堵塞时在车里听音乐是一种对策故答案选C解析:选D 主旨大意题根据最后一段中的“I should not react in life. I should always respond.”可知作者写这篇文章是想告诫人们遇到困难时要积极冷静应对而不是只做些本能的反应故答案选D
The idea of inventing an international language is not a new one. Over the past 180 years, linguists (语言学家) have created over ten different languages that are based on German, Spanish, and English. One of these was Basic English.
By 1923 the First World War had been over for five years, but Europe was still recovering from its effects. Charles Kay Ogden, a linguist and writer, was running several bookshops in Cambridge. He published The Meaning of Meaning (1923), a book describing how we use language. The book received high praise, which drove Ogden to design an international language — something that was much simpler than English. In 1930 Ogden’s book Basic English: A General Introduction with Rules and Grammar was published.
Perhaps it takes about seven years for one to become a good English speaker. Ogden believed that Basic English could be learned in seven weeks. There were only 850 words and the grammar was very simple.
The language attracted the attention of educators all over the world, but its development was stopped by the Second World War. After the war, both the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt looked for ideas that might bring world peace. They both gave speeches that encouraged the use of Ogden’s international language. In the past 60 years, the language has had some success. In some parts of East Asia, teachers are still using Ogden’s word lists.
However, in the main, the language has disappeared. Because there are many more non-native than native speakers of English, recently some linguists have asked whether we should give careful consideration to Ogden’s ideas again. And the Wikipedia website (www.wikipedia.org) has started a version (版本) written in Basic English for non-native learners of the language. Search for it on the Internet now!

The attraction of television is undeniable when it comes to kids.
1.________ Here are guidelines we created to help us decide what's appropriate for our family:
Monitor television time. Choosing good shows isn't a big issue if you're not watching a lot of television, so really the best solution to finding appropriate television is saying, “Go play.”
2.________
Don't trust network ratings. A kidapproved stamp given by a television network is a general guide that doesn't take into account your parenting style and the things your family feels are important. 3.________ There are plenty of adult cartoon shows on television now, many with highly inappropriate topics.
4.________ The bottom line is, I want to know what my kids are watching, and if the TV is on my time in our home, I want to first approve of the show ahead of time, and second to watch it with my kids so that I'm aware of anything they might be seeing that needs intervention (干涉).
Talk about the show with your kids. As kids get older, we realize that we can't shelter them from every single person/show/behavior that doesn't fit exactly with our values. They're going to hear a swear word from time to time — and might walk into the room while the characters in the romantic comedy we're watching are kissing.
5.________
A.If it doesn't feel good, turn it off.
B.And be aware of cartoons!
C.We can talk about what we see, though, using storylines to teach lessons when possible.
D.The standard for what our kids can watch might be difficult to set.
